YA Book Club Pick #10 Summer Reading
July will be our 10th book club already! It will also be our last one before our summer break, after which we'll return in September. So no book club in August everyone! For our July read we picked 3 very summery books to get you into the vacationing mood. Let us know which one you want to read!
Lobsters - Tom Ellen & Lucy Ivison
Exams are over, university is looming on the horizon, and Sam and Hannah are both looking forward to an epic summer.
They're also both looking for love - but finding their 'lobster' soon proves difficult. What with social misunderstandings, the plotting of well-meaning friends, and their own anxieties to deal with, will they ever fall in love?
This 'socially-awkward love story' is told from the alternating perspectives of Sam and Hannah, and follows the ups-and-downs of one eventful summer. The first novel from friends and collaborators Tom Ellen and Lucy Ivison, Lobsters is a frank and very funny young adult romance, aimed firmly at older teens and young adults - there is sexual content and strong language throughout. With lots of laugh-out-loud moments, this is a hugely entertaining debut and young adult readers are sure to relish its hilarious, no-holds-barred depiction of teenage life, love and sex.
This book is translated in Dutch by Blossom Books and if you follow them you know how much they love it.

"I am a collection of oddities, a circus of neurons and electrons: my heart is the ringmaster, my soul is the trapeze artist, and the world is my audience. It sounds strange because it is, and it is, because I am strange." After the sudden collapse of her family, Mim Malone is dragged from her home in northern Ohio to the "wastelands" of Mississippi, where she lives in a medicated milieu with her dad and new stepmom. Before the dust has a chance to settle, she learns her mother is sick back in Cleveland.
So she ditches her new life and hops aboard a northbound Greyhound bus to her real home and her real mother, meeting a quirky cast of fellow travelers along the way. But when her thousand-mile journey takes a few turns she could never see coming, Mim must confront her own demons, redefining her notions of love, loyalty, and what it means to be sane.
Told in an unforgettable, kaleidoscopic voice, "Mosquitoland" is a modern American odyssey, as hilarious as it is heartbreaking.
Summer on the Short Bus - Bethany Crandell
Spoiled, Versace-clad Cricket Montgomery has seventeen years of pampering under her belt. So when her father decides to ship her off to a summer camp for disabled teens to help her learn some accountability, Cricket resigns herself to three weeks of handicapped hell.
Her sentence takes a bearable turn as she discovers the humor and likeability of the campers and grows close to fellow counselors. Now, if she can just convince a certain Zac Efron look-alike with amazing blue eyes that she finally realizes there's life after Gucci, this summer could turn out to be the best she's ever had.
Summer on the Short Bus is a very non-P.C., contemporary YA with a lot of attitude, tons of laughs, and a little life lesson along the way.
Vote on which summer read we'll be discussing in July.
